Abstract
Purpose: This study investigated the relationship between job stress, drinking and smoking of optometrist to provide basic data on stress and health status.

Methods: Participants were optometrists (n=164) working in optical stores in the Korean capital area and were randomly selected for this study. In total, 160 questionnaires were analyzed except 4 questionnaires which were not properly filled. Participants¡¯ job stress was measured by the Korean Occupational Stress Scale (KOSS), alcohol drinking was measured by the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT-K), and smoking was measured by the Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND). The collected data were analyzed using SPSS Statistic 18.0.

Results: In total, 91.3% and 39.4% of optometrists were drinking and smoking, respectively. According to the drinking status, although the drinking group showed higher score in all job stress factors than the non-drinking group, it was not statistically significant. However, there were statistically significant positive correlations with total score, job requirement, insufficient job control, interpersonal conflict, organizational system, lack of reward, and office culture, but not for job insecurity. According to smoking status, the smoking group scored higher than the non-smoking group in terms of job demand, interpersonal conflict, job insecurity, lack of reward, job requirement, insufficient job control, job insecurity, organizational system, lack of reward and total score with statistical significance. In addition, there was a statistically positive correlation in insufficient job control, lack of reward, and total score.

Conclusions: This study confirmed the correlation between job stress, drinking and smoking and predicted that high degree of job stress could lead to excessive drinking and smoking. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the job stress factors of optometrists and propose a corrective method.
